Term and Adjudicate the Difference

January 21st, 2007 by Talboito

Matt Yglesias comments on Republican Senator Brownback’s desire to apply term limits to Federal Judges.

Life tenure for federal judges seems like a bad idea to me — something that probably made more sense during the Founding generation when people didn’t live as long.

Term limits on Judges would also make the confirmation process less acrimonious. Interest groups must fight to the death on each appointment because each appointment lasts that long.

A 15-20 year appointment to the Supreme Court will be enough time to develop expertise, leave a mark on the law and then allow someone else to do the same.
