Troy Patterson was underwhelmed by the Colbert-O’Reilly Interview Series (1) (2) of yesterday evening.
Might Colbert assemble something as scathing as his speech at last year’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner? Would O’Reilly, so often the epitome of restraint, lose his cool? Those of us with shoddy knowledge of particle physics and Star Trek excitedly asked for a reminder: What happens when matter meets antimatter?
The thing fizzled.
I have to disagree. The interviews hit exactly where they could possibly hit. O’Reilly always comes out fine when he talks with Jon Stewart or David Letterman. O’Reilly wouldn’t have been “nailed” or otherwise shown up for his buffoonery.
He has always been in on his own joke. He is an entertainer and he knows it. Maybe his audience doesn’t but his audience doesn’t know Colbert and Stewart or care what Letterman thinks.
So appearing on these shows, or allowing Colbert on his own, is just a sideline with little to no effect on his entertainment empire.
