The Museum of Hoaxes has a list of the top 100 best all-time April Fools Day Hoaxes.
#26 involves several Connecticut newspapers announcing their sale to the Soviet news organization, TASS.
They got calls of the usual variety and then some:
When the publishers tried to explain that the article had been an April Fool’s prank, the caller replied, “You expect me to believe a bunch of Commies?”
