I don’t know why a profile of Arrested Development’s Portia De Rossi includes more quotes from David Cross than the profilee, but I do appreciate the effort.
About the show’s survival, no one is optimistic:
“The ratings aren’t that great,” Cross admits. “The mass of American viewers aren’t that bright or clever or have the patience with a show with a format like this — the single camera style, no laugh track. And Fox — which is this little mom-and-pop network run off of a boat in Australia by a guy named Rupert Murdoch — I don’t know if they have that patience either, especially if they think they can make more money off some My Littlest Retard reality show.”
I predict Fox will find themselves in a Family Guy exemplar situation. They will be reproducing, reairing and backpedaling sometime after cancellation. An ineffectual petition will circulate the internet, DVD sales will spike and kittens will weep.
I would not be surprised if no one suggests Arrested not blaze a straight-to-DVD pathfinding trail. The show has an established fan base, has taken halfsteps toward edgy language and situations, is pretty damn funny and the actors involved seem to believe in the project.
