David Brooks continues his tour of wrong-all-the-time-land.
He is shocked to learn that passionate members of the Center-Left party are more left than center.
They tend to be to the left of the country, especially on social and security issues. They may not agree with Michael Moore on everything, but many enjoyed “Fahrenheit 9/11.” Perhaps they are among the hundreds of thousands of daily visitors to Daily Kos and other blogs that savage Democrats who violate party orthodoxy.
Funny how those same blogs see themselves as those savaging the party orthodoxy. Perhaps bloggers are deluded voices of the stifling orthodoxy preventing maverick Senators from voting to destroy Social Security, but perhaps most Democrats just wish their representatives would vote and speak and act like Democrats.
The easiest point is where Mr. Brooks finds mystery.
Many Republicans are mystified as to why the Democrats, having lost another election, are about to name Howard Dean as party chairman and have allowed Barbara Boxer and Ted Kennedy to emerge unchallenged as the loudest foreign policy voices.
How about we just repeat the phrase “vote and speak and act like Democrats” in hopes of finally demolishing any semblance of the straw-man Republican-lite. Of course Republicans will be mystified by the appeal of Dean, Boxer and Kennedy. They are Republicans.
Republicans don’t vote for Democrats. Growing the party requires creating more Democrats, not stealing Republican voters.
