Coin of the Realm

January 29th, 2005 by Talboito

California is about to get our State quarter.

Interestingly, the article frames these state quarters as a product. It costs 5 cents to mint a quarter so each quarter collected out of a circulation means 20 cents profit for the government.

It seems strange, but then so does this claim:

According to a poll commissioned by the Coinstar coin counting service, about half the adults in the United States say they are collecting the state quarters and trying to assemble a complete set of all 50 of them.

Could this 50% figure really be correct? True, plenty lose random change under seat cushions and tucked into jars, but if Americans are actively collecting these coins in such large numbers maybe we are facing an entertainment gap.

Are 500 channels packed with more reality TV than there exists available reality not enough for the American activity hound?
