Open the blinds

November 29th, 2004 by Talboito

One of Josh Marshall’s readers had an excellent idea.

Require all legislation to be publically available for some reasonable period before any vote. The standard most often quoted is three days. This way we’ll have a fighting chance of discovering all the horrendous tidbits slipped into bills under cover of night before the vote.

Sounds good to me.

We can lead a reform agenda along this avenue. Democratic strategists seem to underplay is openness and transparancy in government. They think voters don’t care enough about government to want transparency. Mayhaps open government falls that way, but voters do care, or claim to care, about honesty.

We are the party who’s laws can stand the test of open inquiry. We have a chance to reinforce our position as the party of honest government.
