Reuters has managed to juxtapose two terribly headlined stories.
I appreciate the purpose of these types of articles. Wire services feel required to provide unfiltered, informative material.
But many, Jon Stewart especially, have observed that acting merely as an amplifier reduces the media to an instrument of politics or celebrity. The media absorbs and reflects the bias of its subjects rather than filtering it out.
This means the headlines are biased towards bias.
Bias bias is replete when working under the rubric of “he said, she said” journalism. In this school, the the content of an attack is meaningless. It matters only that a charge was made. Balance is achieved if the existence of a counter attack is reported along with the attack.
However, two opposing biases can exist independently rather than offsetting. Liberal bias will not cancel conservative bias just because we label them differently. Adding more bias just adds more bias.
Printing two equally biased headlines is not balance it is incompetence.
