We used ‘Just Enough to Lose’

October 3rd, 2004 by Talboito

Thomas Friedman is back writing for the New York Times.

Prior to the war, I had allowed Mr. Friedman’s writing to help develop my opinion on Iraq.

I was wrong. He was wrong.

Now I am right, and Mr. Friedman is finally right.

He has become, as they say, shrill:

No, alas, while the Bush people applied the Powell Doctrine in the Midwest, they applied the Rumsfeld Doctrine in the Middle East. And the Rumsfeld Doctrine is: “Just enough troops to lose.”

The rest of the piece is just as juicy. Thought, he ends floundering with the usual on-the-other-handery that continually wimpens Friedman’s writing. Although he admits Bush blundered, he will not endorse Kerry. Instead he sounds an anemic call to depoliticize foriegn policy.

I wonder how Mr. Friedman supposes we will attain competent leadership without recourse to politics. This type of middling claptrap is emblemetic of Mr. Friedman’s poor thinking over the war. Rather than consider whether our abilities equaled our aspirations, he argued choice and consequences.

Maybe he needs another book writing vacation. He could return after the election, and tell us all to vote for Kerry.
