In one Ear, and in the Other

Glenn Reynolds notes the flailing ineptitude of the Kerry Campaign:

A CAUTIONARY NOTE: Kerry’s various gaffes have got Bush supporters feeling pretty good this week. But I don’t think that the Kerry campaign’s misfortunes will continue forever, and the Bush people need to recognize that his campaign has its own issues. He’s entirely capable of losing this election, despite all the help he’s currently getting from the Kerry campaign’s screwups.

Oh, wait that’s the flailingly inept Bush campaign at work.

It appears that the Kerry Campaign hopes to impress by not impressing. They have laid low throughout the newest troubles in Iraq. Press conferences and 9/11 Commissions have passed him by with only a token quasi-scandal about his military records.

Jesse Taylor singles out a larger point the Kerry Campaign might grasp:

It’s an event-driven race, and if you want to figure out what’s going on between Kerry and Bush, look at what’s happening outside of Kerry and Bush.

It looks like the campaigns, through an equal measure of stupidity or ingenuity working against the other, will cancel each other’s efforts out. The vote this december will be made by events outside either campaign’s control.

Obviously this equation favors Kerry. As Al Gore discovered credit does not seem to fall on its due shoulders in this type of environment. As incumbent, Bush bears more responsiblity for any mess.
