Seriously sad news comes from Slashdot today. LucasArts has cancelled the sequel to legendary adventure game Sam and Max Hit the Road.
Commentators have been pronouncing the death of adventure games for years now. Indeed, fewer and fewer pure adventure games have been made, but I have always dismissed such doomsaying. Sure the glory days of Space Quest and Escape From Monkey Island are behind us, but small publishers and niche titles live on.
But maybe the doomsayers are right. Perhaps this news is the final death of adventure games as we ever knew them. Sad news indeed.
