I didn’t get home in time to catch Bush’s State of the Union speech. By all accounts it was fairly contentless and he knocked over Cheney’s glass of water at the end.
I did see the Democratic response. It was mostly too painful to watch. The staging was horrible. The lighting was impossible. Nancy Pelosi was excruciating. Tom Daschle was better, but only approached acceptable.
What they ought to have done was allow each candidate time to respond, or arrange some impromptu debate. The conflict would make intriguing television for the networks and dissipate the focus from Bush.
Daschle or whoever would organize the thing must ensure that each candidate stays on topic. They would attack each point Bush made in his speech and offer their competing vision/proposal/trashing of the President’s record.
Oh well, too late now anyway.
