They haaave gone MAD

December 10th, 2003 by Talboito

Comedy Central has aired some terrible shows n the past. Original programming and syndication alike has always been hit or miss for the channel. For every The Critic, there is a Tough Crowd with Collin Quinn.

Essentially the Comedy Central executives have struck a delicate balance. They give you the half hour spoonful sugar that is The Daily Show to ease down the whopping big dose of Crank Yankers. Its like comic relief in a Shakespearean drama. At the good you laugh and at the rest you cry.

For this reason, I anxiously await what hilarious new show Comedy Central has in store for us this January. They must have something good. Otherwise how can they explain this development?

Come January, Comedy Central will begin airing episodes of MAD TV.

A mystifying move:

TNN has been airing Mad TV reruns to terrible ratings (0.2 at 6 p.m. ET) and has rights until August 2004, but Comedy said it will add the show in January 2004.

Just so there is no confusion, Mad TV is not funny now, was never funny in the past and in no conceivable way could be funny in the future. It makes some shows on PAX look good in comparison.

Comedy Central has even begun an ad campaign promoting this programming travesty. If I were them I would fire myself for allowing this to happen. I could see buying the rights and then not actually showing any episodes out of some duty to mankind. For that I would applaud them. For this I can loll hold my head in shame.

Even if my sarcastic “balancing act” theorizing had any validity, it would take a show of Simpsonian purportions to balance out MAD TV. I somehow doubt Comedy Central is up to the task.

You could not be more right if you tried.

I was willing to tolerate the MadTV development, as, like you, I know Comedy Central sometimes falls asleep at the wheel. I figured something good had to be due soon. (After Crank Yankers, Kid Notorious, and the new hosts on the Man Show, something HAD to be coming soon…for the sake of statistic probablity if nothing else.)

But to have MadTV totally replace the SNL syndication on Comedy Central….just, damn.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit some SNL episodes leave me wanting that hour of my life back, and Comedy Central had a tedency to run SNL into the ground, but even a fair episode of SNL beats a good episode of MadTV.

Let’s just hope the network execs pick up on the growing unrest among us humble viewers.

I couldn’t disagree more. Mad TV is hilarious. Comedy Central has been showing the same re-runs of SNL for several years now. It’s time for something new. In my opinion, SNL is on a decline. Have you actually seen any episodes for this year or last year? They aren’t funny at all. Most of the good people have left the show. I for one (and several of my friends) did not realize how funny Mad TV was until Comedy Central started carrying it. I’m definitely glad they did.
