Proving some old saying about cockroaches scurrying from the direct and abusive daylight sun, the Egyptian library that had previously displayed the Protocols of the Elders of Zion in the same case as the Torah will now remove the forgeries.
There is a bit more to this story. There is something more than curious.
Here is Youssef Ziedan, Director of the Museum, now:
“My professional view is that it is a silly book,” he said. “Its only significance is that it is the first Arabic edition of the book that has influenced the Arab mentality to a great extent.”
This was Ziedan then:
“Perhaps this book of the ‘Protocols of the Elders of Zion’ is more important to the Zionist Jews of the world than the Torah, because they conduct Zionist life according to it… It is only natural to place the book in the framework of an exhibit of Torah [scrolls].
The first quote is one Ziedan gave to The Guardian, a western newspaper. The second quote is from an interview Ziedan gave to an Egyptian newspaper and translated by watchdog group, MEMRI.
Presumably, Zeidan is fairly well educated to have secured his position. He knows the blatantly anti-semitic attitude apparent in his earlier comments won’t play with the western media. So he lies.
This case is close shaven against Mahathir Muhammed’s speech at the Islamic Summit Conference in which Muslim leaders cheered his blatantly anti-semitic remarks.
Talk of Zionist conspiracies and other incitements against Jews is acceptable at home. A thin veneer of tolerant language is to be used abroad. Misunderstanding, hatred and, ultimately, violence is the unfortunate result.
These incidents give the impression of the Muslim world as a whitewashed house with venomous hatred creeping about inside. I sincerely hope reality will soon disabuse be of that impression.
