Wired reports that several ATMs were infected by a computer worm last August. Unsurprisingly, the ATMs were running Windows, and made by everyone’s favorite computing kiosk manufacturer Diebold.
It is gonna get worse before it gets better:
Computer security experts predicted more problems to come as Windows migrates to critical systems consumers rely on.
If consumers and companies choose Windows on the desktop it is understandable. The standard interface Windows provides is a trade-off that makes sense no matter how insecure the system is. To choose Windows in ATMs is naught but foolishness.
Imagine if these infected ATMs had been voting machines. No wait, I’d rather not.
