It appears that Robert Tagorda and I have pretty well converged on the end of this issue. Everyone should go read his comment below, and maybe other people could comment as well. That’s what the commenting function is for, after all.
Mr. Tagorda agrees that Crandall’s donation is pretty well a non-issue, and that Dean is under no compunction to return the money.
I agree it is very simple for Dean to make a statement of the kind Mr. Tagorda advises, and that he should do so. Such a thing would be easy, and responsible of him.
I would like the thank Mr. Tagorda for keeping a civil tone throughout this whole discussion. It is very easy to fall into vicious patterns of snark and sarcasm over these types of issues, and I fear my posts occasionally edged into that area.
I apologize if ever such a thing occurred, and urge any reader of anything I write to call me on it when I slip up in this vein.

Quite gracious of you to put up this post. Thank you for the good discussion. It helps, given all the many mean-spirited responses out there!
